Approximate ages 9-13. [Younger athletes require more assistance from parents.]
FOCUSED ON THE FOUR KEY AREAS OF MENTAL PERFORMANCE, WHICH ARE THE MAIN AREAS OF PERFORMANCE OTHER THAN
PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE (thoughts, emotions, spirit, and relationships).
This training is intended for ages 13 and under. Athletes aged 12-13 should be able to do the training by themselves. Athletes aged 10-11 should be able to complete the
MENTAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT and do much of the training by themselves, with some exceptions. Athletes aged 8-9 will require help with the MENTAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
and also the training. They will need help in understanding the abstract concepts and following directions for the Assessment and also the training; the younger the athlete,
the more help s/he will need. Athletes of any age who are physically training in a sport, should begin doing mental training; however, for younger athletes (7 and under), it
should be simple and unstructured. Simply helping these younger athletes talk about their thoughts and feelings relative to their sport and their performance would be a good
start in mental training.
We strongly encourage parents and/or family members to help your athletes train according to their individual needs. The mental training that they do for sports is also good
mental training for all other areas of their life, i.e., family, school, and social. In addition to helping your athletes, you will be strengthening your support role by being
sa part of their learning, doing, and progressing. We assure you that this will be time well spent.
